Best Camper Van Destinations in the Southwest US

Nothing beats the Southwest United States when it comes to adventure and diverse landscapes. From its sweeping deserts and towering canyons, to the snow-capped mountains with crisp blue lakes, this corner of the country is unmatched. What's more, there are plenty of campgrounds and RV parks to pull up in style and comfort with an altCamp camper van. Here are our top picks:

1. Arizona

Arizona is another excellent place to camp year-round, especially in a camper van. Don't be fooled by the desert reputation though, some regions can dip below freezing in the winter. That said, the state is home to two of the most popular national parks in the Southwest, the Grand Canyon, and Saguaro National Park. Other notable destinations in the state include Monument Valley, the iconic red rock formations of Sedona, and the stunning Havasu Falls. RV parks and campgrounds are scattered all throughout the state, many offering stunning views of the desert landscape.

2. California

We're biased, but California is the best of the best. From our headquarters in Costa Mesa, you can reach nearly every landscape imaginable. It's been rumored that some will surf and ski in the same day. California lays claim to some of the most magnificent National Parks, including Yosemite National Park, Joshua Tree, and Sequoia National Park. The Golden State also offers numerous well-maintained, amenity-rich state parks with something on offer for any adventure. RV parks and campgrounds are abundant throughout the state but go quickly, so be sure to book well in advance.

3. New Mexico

New Mexico is an unassuming road trip destination with plenty of stunning attractions. The state is home to the breathtaking White Sands National Park, the ancient ruins at Chaco Culture National Historical Park, and the mysterious Carlsbad Caverns. Other highlights include the majestic mountains of Santa Fe and the rugged terrain of the Gila Wilderness. There are plenty of RV parks and campgrounds throughout this region but plan ahead to ensure a spot.

4. Colorado

Joshua Tree National Park is unlike any national park. Shortly after entering the gate and winding down a few turns, you’re met with rock configurations that resemble the surface of Mars. This national park is also home to the iconic Joshua Tree, as well as vast expanses of desert, all surrounded by rugged mountains. On your journey, you can explore the park’s trails, take in the stunning desert views, and visit some of the area’s unique attractions, such as the Keys Ranch. After a day of exploration, you can set up camp in one of the park’s campgrounds, allowing you to take in the expansive night sky seeing shooting stars, planets, and sometimes the Milky Way.

5. Nevada

Many consider Nevada to be a drive-thru state, but we disagree.  Aside from the Las Vegas Strip, Nevada lays claim to world-class outdoor venues such as the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and the crisp blue waters of Lake Tahoe. Other Nevada highlights include the rugged terrain of the Ruby Mountains and the sand dunes at Great Basin National Park. Whether you're looking for mountains, desert, or forest, Nevada has a place for you and your camper van.

Ultimately, whether you're a snowbird looking for some reprieve or a west coast native looking to get out of the city-life chaos, the Southwest has everything you need for a bucket list adventure. As we always say, you can talk yourself out of anything if you think long enough, so don't wait, book that road trip, and don't look back!
